HOW DO YOU PIQUE THE CURIOUSITY OF OFFBEAT TRAVELLERS?

Time Out magazine was founded in 1968 by Tony Elliot, who saw a need to capture the happenings of swanky 1960s London. This time around, Step On magazine would urge those to explore the unknown globally.

* EDITORIAL DESIGN * STUDENT PROJECT

Brief

Keen to launch the first edition, the brief required a non-conformist and edgy cover and a featured editorial design for a controversial and exclusive article on travelling to North Korea.

Approach

With an audience not easily impressed by conventional travel publications, both the cover and the editorial feature would need to go beyond standard imagery and simple treatments.

Ideation

For the cover and featured editorial spread, I explored surreal imagery, paintings, and digital collage formats that could contrast reality with more experimental and playful depictions of exploration or travel.

Idea

The cover would take a surreal approach, depicting the freedom and rebellion of travel. For the editorial spread, the reality of North Korea and the spectacle surrounding it would be highlighted.
