Brief
In need of a new cover and keen to move away from the standard digital first techniques, this brief called for a more handmade approach.
Approach
Full of comical scenarios and characterful felines, the cover needed to capture the hilarious content inside and honour the humour and style of illustration that The Oatmeal fans have come to love.
Ideation
For ideation, I explored books in the comic genre, feline behaviours and the common themes associated with them. To move away from the expected comic-style grid, I wanted a solid but simplified focal point paired with a characterful typeface.
Idea
Playing on the classic crochet mouse toy, this cat, would instead wield a crochet knife. A contrast of deadly meets soft provided an element of improbable humour found in the comics themselves.
